At the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation, we have the privilege of working alongside families across generations. Repeatedly, we hear a shared hope to pass along more than financial resources. Families want to nurture values, encourage generosity and help the next generation understand their role in building strong, vibrant communities.

Those conversations often turn to teens.

“The teenage years can be tricky,” parents and grandparents tell us. “But we also know this is an important time to start talking about giving back."

They’re right.

Teens are forming opinions, building empathy and developing a sense of purpose. With the right opportunities, they can begin to understand community challenges and see themselves as part of the solution.

Research reinforces what many families already know: when young people engage in acts of generosity, they grow in confidence, connection and a sense of belonging. Giving is not just about helping others; it is also about helping teens discover their own ability to make a difference.

But getting started doesn’t always feel simple. That’s where we can help.

Here are ten ways to invite teens into philanthropy in meaningful, accessible ways.

1. Start by listening

Begin with curiosity. Ask your teen what issues matter to them, whether that’s protecting natural spaces, supporting mental health, strengthening local schools or helping neighbors meet basic needs. Listening first builds trust and creates space for deeper engagement over time.

2. Volunteer together

Giving is more than financial — it’s relational. Spend time as a family volunteering with a local nonprofit or community organization. Whether it’s an afternoon at a neighborhood food shelf or helping at a community event, these shared experiences make the impact of giving real and visible.

3. Invite them into giving decisions

If your family participates in charitable giving, such as through a donor advised fund, consider inviting teens into the conversation. Recommending a small grant can help them feel ownership and connection. It shows that their voice matters and builds confidence in their ability to contribute.

4. Explore nonprofits in your community

There are incredible organizations throughout Minnesota doing important work every day. Visiting or learning about a nonprofit helps teens see how community-based solutions take shape. Even a short visit or conversation can spark new understanding.

“We believe one of the greatest gifts we can offer the next generation is the awareness that they belong in this work — that they have something to contribute and that their actions matter.

5. Encourage learning and exploration

Support your teen in researching causes they care about. This can build awareness and critical thinking as they explore different approaches to community impact. It’s also an opportunity to talk about what makes organizations effective and grounded in the communities they serve.

6. Share your family’s story

Talk about why your family supports certain causes, whether it’s stories rooted in personal experience, community ties or long-term commitments to help teens understand that philanthropy is about relationships and responsibility, not just resources.

7. Support giving from their own resources

Encourage teens to give in ways that feel meaningful to them, whether from an allowance, a summer job or a special occasion. When young people choose how to give their own money, they begin to see themselves as active participants in their communities.

8. Connect them with people making a difference

Across Minnesota, there are leaders, organizers and everyday community members working to create change. Introducing teens to these individuals can be powerful. These connections help young people see that impact is possible and that it often starts with one person taking action.

9. Bring teens into community spaces

Consider inviting teens to community events, conversations or gatherings where local issues and solutions are discussed. These spaces can deepen their understanding of community needs and show how collaboration leads to progress.

10. Focus on growth over perfection

There is no single path to raising generous, community-minded young people. What matters most is creating opportunities for reflection, learning and participation. Small moments such as conversations, experiences and decisions add up over time.

At the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation, we believe one of the greatest gifts we can offer the next generation is the awareness that they belong in this work — that they have something to contribute and that their actions matter.

Together, we can help your teenagers grow into informed, compassionate and engaged members of our community. To learn more contact your philanthropic advisor, or a member of our Philanthropic Services team.
