Director of Advocacy, Community Engagement and Equity (ACE)

Advocacy should be led by the voices of our communities that have been left out of the conversation. To be ‘Community Led’ also means leading in advocacy work.

Katya Zepeda is the Director of Advocacy, Community Engagement and Equity (ACE). She joined the Foundation in 2025. Katya obtained a BS in Organizational Psychology from the University of Minnesota – Crookston and has over 3 years of experience in legislation as the former Legislative & Policy Director at Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs. She is also a board member of MCF and has 10 years of experience in community engagement with a focus on equity initiatives.

Katya feels it is important, now more than ever, to have a strong advocacy agenda to close the equity gaps that persist in the state of Minnesota. These gaps exist due to systems that have been created or protected by legislation. She believes one way to create a just and vibrant Minnesota is by combining resources and creating advocacy efforts that challenge and dismantle years of systemic oppression. The Foundation recognizes that, which is why she is excited to be a part of a new initiative as the Director of ACE under the Community Impact team.

Originally from Mexico, Katya lived in northwest Minnesota for over 25 years and is now enjoying exploring the Metro area with her husband, two children, and their dog. She has family in Nigeria, the United States, Spain, England, and Mexico. Katya and her family love to try new cuisines, attend cultural events, travel, and visit museums or historical sites.
